Which travel vaccines do I need? A checklist for Mottingham travellers

Planning a travel vaccine checklist for Mottingham travellers

Which travel vaccines you need depends on where you are going, how long for, the time of year and what you will be doing. This checklist helps you plan before your appointment at our travel clinic in Mottingham, where your pharmacist confirms the final plan for your trip.

Start with your destination

The country you are visiting sets most of the picture, but the detail matters too. A city break needs less than a month in the countryside, and the wet season carries more risk from some infections than the dry season. Have your rough itinerary to hand, including any rural or off-the-beaten-track sections, as these often change what is advised.

Your pre-travel checklist

  • Book four to six weeks before travel where you can, as some courses need more than one dose.
  • Check your routine boosters are current, especially diphtheria, tetanus and polio, which is topped up every ten years.
  • Consider the common travel vaccines for your region, such as hepatitis A and B and typhoid.
  • Ask about malaria tablets if your destination is a risk area.
  • Check whether your destination requires a certificate. Some countries require yellow fever, and for Hajj or Umrah the MenACWY certificate is needed.
  • Bring any record of vaccines you have had before, so nothing is repeated unnecessarily.

On certificates, one honest note: we do not currently offer the yellow fever vaccine ourselves. If your destination requires it, we will tell you and point you to an approved yellow fever centre, and we will still handle the rest of your travel vaccinations.

Not sure? Use our checker

If you would like a quick steer before you book, the interactive checker on our Mottingham travel clinic page asks four short questions and shows the vaccines we would usually discuss for your trip. It is guidance only, and your pharmacist confirms everything at the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which vaccines are compulsory?

Very few vaccines are compulsory for entry, and where a certificate is required we will flag it. Most travel vaccines are recommendations based on your risk, and we explain the difference clearly.

Do I need everything on the list?

No. The list is a prompt, not a prescription. Your pharmacist tailors it to your destination and plans, so you only have what your trip actually calls for.

Can I sort everything in one appointment?

Usually, yes. Vaccines, advice and any malaria tablets are handled in the same visit, with no GP referral needed.
