Routine Vaccines

Ensure these are up to date before travel

MMR
Measles, Mumps, Rubella

Essential routine vaccine protecting against three serious viral infections. Most UK adults received this as children but check your records.

All travellers 2 doses (if not previously vaccinated)
DTP Booster
Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio

A combined booster vaccine recommended every 10 years for travellers. Protects against three potentially fatal diseases.

All travellers 1 booster dose
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A Virus

Essential for all travellers to India. Spread through contaminated food and water, Hepatitis A is endemic across the Indian subcontinent. Provides long-term immunity after a two-dose course.

All travellers 1 dose (booster at 6–12 months)
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B Virus

Recommended for longer stays or if you may be exposed to blood or body fluids. Particularly important for adventure travellers and those visiting rural areas.

Long stays, adventure travellers 3 doses over 21 days (accelerated)
Typhoid
Salmonella Typhi

Common in areas with poor sanitation. Spread through contaminated food and water. Essential for India — street food is a major part of the experience and typhoid is widespread in many regions.

All travellers (especially street food lovers) 1 dose
Japanese Encephalitis
JE Virus

Recommended if visiting rural areas, especially rice-growing regions of eastern and southern India, or staying for extended periods. Spread by mosquitoes and can cause serious neurological illness.

Rural travellers, long stays 2 doses, 28 days apart
Rabies
Rabies Virus

Strongly recommended for adventure travellers, rural visitors, and families with children. Stray dogs are extremely common across India, including in cities. Rabies is endemic and India has the highest number of rabies deaths globally.

Adventure travellers, animal contact 3 doses over 21–28 days

Know Before You Go

Health Risks When Traveling
to India

Understanding potential health risks helps you prepare properly. Our pharmacists will assess your specific itinerary and activities to provide tailored advice.

Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Malaria risk varies across India — it is high in states like Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and parts of the Northeast, but low in major cities such as Delhi and Mumbai. Dengue fever is widespread throughout India, including urban areas. Chikungunya and Zika virus are also present. Use DEET-based repellents, sleep under treated mosquito nets in risk areas, and wear long sleeves during dawn and dusk.

Food & Water Safety

Travellers' diarrhoea is common. Drink bottled water only, avoid ice from unknown sources, and be cautious with street food—choose busy stalls with fresh preparation. Typhoid and Hepatitis A are real risks from contaminated food and water, making vaccination essential before your trip.

Japanese Encephalitis

Risk is higher in rural and agricultural areas, particularly rice-growing regions of eastern and southern India. The virus is spread by mosquitoes and can cause serious brain inflammation. Vaccination is recommended for travellers spending extended time in rural India or visiting during the rainy season (May–October).

Rabies from Animal Bites

India has one of the highest rates of rabies in the world. Stray dogs are extremely common in cities, towns, and rural areas. Monkeys are present at many temples and tourist sites. Rabies is fatal once symptoms appear. Pre-exposure vaccination is strongly recommended for all travellers, particularly those visiting rural areas, cycling, or travelling with children.

Malaria Prevention

Malaria Prevention
for India

Malaria risk in India varies significantly by region and season. Major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Agra carry low risk, while states such as Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and parts of the Northeast have high transmission. Risk increases during and after the monsoon season (June to October). Our pharmacists will assess your specific itinerary and recommend whether antimalarial prophylaxis is needed for your trip.

Risk Areas in India

States with the highest malaria transmission include Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of the Northeast (Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura). Goa and Rajasthan carry seasonal risk. Major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata are generally low risk but not entirely malaria-free. Both P. falciparum and P. vivax are present.

Antimalarial Options

We prescribe Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil), Doxycycline, and Mefloquine. Our pharmacists will recommend the most suitable option based on your health, activities, and duration of stay. All options available in stock at both clinics.

Bite Prevention

Use DEET 50% insect repellent on exposed skin. Wear light-coloured long sleeves and trousers at dawn/dusk. Sleep under insecticide-treated mosquito nets in rural areas. We stock premium DEET repellents at both clinics.

Common Questions

India Travel
Vaccination FAQs

Do I need vaccinations for India

While no vaccinations are legally mandatory for UK travellers entering India directly, several are strongly recommended by the NHS and WHO. Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations are considered essential for all travellers. Additional vaccines like Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis, and Rabies are recommended based on your activities and itinerary. Our pharmacists will assess your specific plans and advise accordingly.

How much do India travel vaccinations cost?

Individual vaccines range from £35–£95 per dose. Our Essential India Package starts from £120 (Hepatitis A + Typhoid + consultation), and the Comprehensive Package from £280 (including Hep A&B, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis + consultation). All prices include expert consultation and administration. We offer competitive pricing with package discounts to make travel health affordable.

Can I get vaccinated last minute?

Yes! We offer same-day appointments at both our clinics. While 6–8 weeks before departure is ideal, most single-dose vaccines like Hepatitis A and Typhoid can be given right up until your departure date and still offer significant protection. Walk-ins are welcome, or call ahead to guarantee your slot.

Do you provide Yellow Fever certificates?

A Yellow Fever certificate is required if you are arriving in India from or transiting through a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission. It is not required for travellers flying directly from the UK. Your pharmacist will confirm whether you need the vaccine and certificate based on your specific itinerary and routing.

Which areas of India have malaria risk?

Malaria risk in India varies by region and season. The highest-risk states are Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of the Northeast (Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura). Goa and Rajasthan carry seasonal risk, particularly during and after the monsoon (June to October). Major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Agra, and Jaipur are generally low risk. Both Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax are present. Our pharmacists will assess your specific itinerary and advise whether antimalarial prophylaxis is recommended.

How long before travel should I get vaccinated?

Ideally 6–8 weeks before departure for full vaccine courses. However, many single-dose vaccines can be given 2–4 weeks before travel. Even last-minute travellers benefit from same-day single-dose vaccines. Hepatitis B requires 3 doses over 21 days (accelerated schedule), and Japanese Encephalitis needs 2 doses 28 days apart. Book as early as possible, but don't delay—coming late is always better than not coming at all.
